Guide to Using Dewaxed Shellac Flakes for Hat Stiffening

This package contains enough shellac flakes to stiffen approximately 3 average-size hats.

1. Preparing the Shellac Solution

Option 1 – Full Batch (Approx. 3 Hats)
Mix the entire package with 450 ml (15 fl oz) of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.

Option 2 – Single Hat Batch
Mix approximately 1/3 of the package with 150 ml (5 fl oz) of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.

Place the shellac flakes and alcohol in a glass container with a tight-fitting lid. Stir occasionally. The shellac should dissolve completely within approximately 2 hours.

Note: Shellac flakes are non-toxic before alcohol is added.

2. How to Apply

Transfer the prepared solution to a spray bottle.
Spray evenly onto the hat body and brush the solution into the material to ensure proper absorption. Allow the hat to dry completely.
For additional stiffness, apply additional coats as needed.

3. Important Note for Light-Colored Hats

Shellac may add a slight yellow tint to light-colored materials.
Not recommended for white hat bodies.
Always test on a small area before full application.

4. Safety
• Work in a well-ventilated area.
• Avoid open flames.
• If sensitive to fumes, wear appropriate respiratory protection.

• Different hat styles require different levels of stiffness. Test before full application.
• Store unused shellac flakes in a sealed container in a cool, dry place.
• Store prepared shellac solution tightly sealed to reduce evaporation.
• Apply before or after blocking according to your preferred hat-making process.
